Graywater
Graywater is the wastewater produced by clothes washers, showers, and bathroom washbasins (not including kitchen sinks or dishwashers). It can be re-used for landscape irrigation outdoors, or for toilet flushing indoors. As an emergency drought measure, in August 2009, the California plumbing code was revised to allow for simple inexpensive graywater systems for irrigation. A clothes washer system can be installed without a building permit if it is in compliance with Section 1603A. 1. 1. (see http://hcd.ca.gov/codes/shl/Preface_ET_Emergency_Graywater.pdf). Graywater from clothes washers is a great source of irrigation water since it is produced on a regular basis (typically over 100 gallons per week per family) and contains nutrients that are beneficial to plants. A gravity-fed system to mulch basins in the landscape works especially well for trees and larger shrubs.
